Kay is literally the soul of the Multiverse. Jasher loves her and has to save her. He just can't actually know that, know that until the very end.
Jasher couldn't have done things any other way than he did to stumble through the Multiverse, and fix things with it in order to untie the greatest Gordian Knot plot in history.
